Food nutrients are those things we eat that provide nourishment for our body. We get food nutrients from the above:
Carbohydrates : are the main source of energy for human. They are very essentials for human to perform and to work. Cereals like maize, millet and sorghum are main sources of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates foods are starch, sugar, cassava or garri, yam, and plantain. These foods give us energy to work and play. Eating too much carbohydrate food can make one to be too fat.
Fats and oil : such as Palm oil, margarine and butter, animals fats and groundnuts supply us with plenty of calories and heat and insulate (from unpleasant experiences or influences – shield) us from cold.
Protein foods : are meat, beans, Cowpea, eggs and fish. These foods help us to hurriedly or quickly recover from any illness and protect us from sickness. Proteins also assist or help the body tissues to grow and develop well. Lack of protein in the human body can lead to poor growth and development.
Vitamins and minerals : are found mostly in vegetables and fruits such as pumpkin leaves, bitter leaves, oranges, pineapple, mango, guava and Pappas. They help the body systems and ensure good bowel movement as well as improve the gums, teeth and lungs. Lack of vitamins and minerals will lead to poor growth and soft bones in the children growth and development.
Fruits means any sweet, edible part of a plant that resembles seed-bearing fruit, even though its does not develop from a floral ovary; also used in a technically imprecise sense for some sweet or sweetish vegetables, that resemble a true fruit.
Be mindful when eating. We can often eat on the go and not only fail to taste the food but also overeat or not chew our food properly. To eat with caution, decide you are going to make eating your sole focus. Take note of the food on your plate, pay attention to colours, shapes and smells. Bring your awareness to the sensation of chewing and the flavours, textures and temperature in your mouth. Notice any urge to eat quickly or swallow your food without chewing it completely. Be aware of your attention getting arrested from the experience of eating, chewing and gently bring it back to the flavour of the food. What ever you gonna be eating observe it first, know the usefulness, the value, the nutrients, and the work of it in your body system before taking them.
